Tim Gatenby, based in London, UK, masterfully blends classical painting techniques with a playful, nostalgic twist. His paintings ask us to question our consumerist lifestyles by reimagining popular cultural icons into funny, blurred-out parodies. With a clever use of fluffy airbrushing and thicker oil paint, Gatenby’s work subverts traditional painting techniques, inviting us to think about how art fits into today’s digital world.

 

His artwork features deconstructed characters from pop culture subverted through dark humor, with the aim of highlighting the pressures of consumerism and our tendency to overindulge. Fast food is often masterfully threaded through his paintings as a theme, emphasising the excess of modern life.

 

Gatenby's intention with "Soft Focus" is to blur the iconography to the point where it becomes almost an abstract background for the still life imagery superimposed on top. Influenced by trompe l'oeil, these works aim to disrupt how the viewer observes the painting.​
